Student Leaders

RISC’s Student Leaders work both in their schools and in the wider community to advance our mission of supporting immigrants.

Hi! My name is Alejandro, and I am a student at Norfolk Academy. My mother immigrated to the U.S. from Bolivia, and after hearing stories of discrimination from her and other immigrants I know, I knew I needed to take action. In a time of increased xenophobia and human rights violations against immigrants, I find it extremely important to get youth involved in service and advocacy so we can show solidarity with our immigrant neighbors.

Hello! My name is Amira and I am a student in the Global Studies and World Language Academy at Tallwood High School. Not only is this topic very personal to me since I come from a family of immigrants, but I believe it is not talked about enough, which is why I was excited to be apart of RISC! I wanted to create a safe space for people at school to feel welcomed and supported. I am determined to learn about others’ experiences and contribute to creating a more inclusive community! :)

My name is Kimberly, I am currently a student at Bayside High School! I am a first generation daughter of Honduran immigrants; Spanish was my first language, but I am fluent in English and proficient in Portuguese as well. I wanted to join RISC as I have always been passionate on political issues, specifically immigration, and I want to ensure every immigrant in VA knows their rights, stays safe, and every person still has their basic human rights.
